GIGANTIC (A Tale of Two Johns)Welcome to the surreal and poetic planet of They Might Be Giants, the Brooklyn-based musical duo of John Flansburgh and John Linnell, who have spent the past twenty years crafting their singular alt-pop style -- cerebral, dark and humorous. Embracing the Do-It-Yourself ethos of true independent artists, They Might Be Giants has followed a unconventional path to cult stardom -- from John and John's first meeting in a Lincoln, Massachusetts grade school through the East Village performance art scene of the early '80s to their 2002 Grammy Award -- aided by stunning, low-budget music videos, trailblazing use of the internet and a truly groundbreaking utilization of the telephone answering machine. GIGANTIC (A TALE OF TWO JOHNS) is a comprehensive chronicle of the band's 20-year history, told through performance, animation, videos and hilarious commentaries from friends and fans. Reflecting They Might Be Giants' unusual and unique place in the pop music universe, the film features appearances and contributions from a wide range of fans and collaborators: Musicians Frank Black, Mark Hoppus and Syd Straw; This American Life's Ira Glass and Sarah Vowell; Authors Michael Azerrad and Dave Eggers; Journalists Gina Arnold and Robert Krulwich. In addition, director AJ Schnack called upon actors Janeane Garofalo, Michael McKean, Andy Richter and Harry Shearer to recite the band's lyrics. The film also features appearances by Conan O'Brien, Jon Stewart, Joe Franklin and actor/director Josh Kornbluth.
"No wonder filmmaker AJ Schnack was able to snare the likes of Dave Eggers, Jon Stewart, and Frank Black to discuss the band's a pop-cultural importance in an oral history that is truly funny, charming, and even touching. Not necessarily just for fans of TMBG, the film is also a sweet reminiscence of a time when alternative really lived up to its definition". -- Nylon Magazine "The movie is a must-see." -- Michael O'Sullivan, WASHINGTON POST "Gigantic is a celebration of a lasting collaboration, creative integrity and the right to be different." --Paul Sherman, BOSTON HERALD

I Am Trying To Break Your Heart: A Film About WilcoIn the fall of 2000, Wilco entered the studio to record their highly anticipated fourth album. Building on three critically acclaimed albums and a reputation for phenomenal live shows, the band seemed posed to cement its reputation as one of the great American rock groups. So how is it that one year later, with completed record in hand, the band found itself rejected by its corporate record label and missing two of its original members? First-time filmmaker and award-winning photographer Sam Jones was on-hand, chronicling this turbulent chapter in Wilco's history as it unfolded. The recording process is always rife with tension. That's to be expected, especially when the band is as ambitious as Wilco. The real surprise comes when the band delivers the final album to Reprise and all they get in response is two weeks of ominous silence. Soon, contracts are being broken and partnerships are being severed as Jones discovers he has a far more tumultuous tale to tell than he originally envisioned. Throughout the film, Jones tempers the backstage dramas and unfathomable corporate shenanigans with inspired live performances, as frontman Jeff Tweedy and company perform songs from the beleaguered "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" album, recently released and already considered a modern classic. Shot in luminous black and white. I Am Trying To Break Your Heart is a riveting portrait of a band making the best music of its career.
"Witness the brilliance of 'Don't Look Back,' 'Gimme Shelter' and 'D.O.A.' To this list we can now add Sam Jones' 'I Am Trying to Break Your Heart,' a riveting account of the crafting of 'Yankee Hotel Foxtrot,' the recent masterpiece by Chicago's Wilco." -- Jim Derogatis, Chicago Sun Times
